Poems and Paintings for World Mental Health Day

Updated: Oct 15

Below I am sharing a series of paintings and poems written for World Mental Health Day. After each poem I will also share a video where you can hear me reading my poem.

Just one little action,

a tiny spark igniting the dark,

a whisper from the heavens,

a breathless flutter in the air.

If we heed the call of soft winds,

if we let them carry us away,

there's wonder in the gentle sway of branches,

each leaf a promise to embrace.

Birdsong lingers like love letters scattered

notes penned under a sunlit sky,

echoes that entwine,

with our hearts’ rhythm.

In every note rises memory:

the forest wrapped within whispers,

ancient trees holding secrets shared with time,

laughter woven into the fabric of roots.

This beloved world unfolds beneath our steps;

crossing paths adorned by fleeting choices.

The ripple grows as each heart dares to love,

be it small or grand, a joy that shimmers freely.

With just one little action,

we dance alongside love's flow;

letting our hearts guide us toward grace,

together crafting beginnings from warm tomorrows.

...

Better Together

In shadows cast by screens, the silence grows,

Where once we thrived on laughter and the light,

Now whispers fade, replaced by endless shows,

A world of pixels veiling hearts from sight.

Yet in this tangled web of shifting sands,

Embrace the vibrant colours that unite;

For difference blooms where open minds expand,

Each voice a thread to weave our shared delight.

Doubts may linger where hopes begin to wane,

Like autumn leaves that tremble in their fall.

But as we gather strength through every pain,

Together we shall rise above it all.

Let’s teach and learn with love our guiding star;

In unity's embrace, we will wander far.

...

My heart is a closet where grief sleeps,

Stored in the shadows of memories past,

Hung on hangers lined with whispers and sighs,

Dusty garments of moments that once breathed.

In corners it curls, wrapped tight in silence,

A coat heavy with tears woven into seams;

Each fold holds a story unspoken and deep,

The fabric of loss stitched through with dreams.

Yet sometimes I dare to open those doors wide,

To let in the light that finds cracks in my soul;

Awoken from slumber, the spectre will glide,

Glimmers of sorrow that tempests console.

But even as daylight uncovers its shape,

I find strength in knowing: from darkness grows grace.

...

In autumn’s grip, the leaves drift from their boughs,

Their crisp whispers echo through fading light;

Each day grows shorter as darkness allows

A weight upon my heart to dim its bright.

Yet in that heaviness of dusk’s embrace,

When shadows deepen and the chill seems vast,

I glimpse within the dark a tender grace,

The promise stitched into each season’s cast.

For petals fallen, cradle hopes reborn;

Amidst decay, new colours gently creep.

As winter blankets earth in frosted scorn,

Hope waits with quiet love beneath its sleep.

So let the aching heart be still tonight;

Within dark days blooms unfolding light.

Over the last few months I've been creating digital zines (tiny magazines) featuring my artwork and poetry. This one has a mental health focus and has been well received as a reel on Instagram - you might find it easier to watch there.

Mental health is one of the themes which guide and inform my creativity, and which is managed thanks to being creative. You will find poems and paintings in many posts on this website but you might be particularly like my recent series shared in Disjointed Houses.
