I've been enjoying making both digital and physical Zines over the last few months.
But before I share some of them, let me tell you what a zine is if you have no idea....
A zine is a self published, free publication which include text, images, artwork, creative projects etc and is circulated to a small audience. The term "zine" is short for "fanzine", which is a combination of the words "fan" and "magazine". They can be about a variety of topics such as music, art, politics, justice issues, or a personal memoir. Zines can be narrative, journalistic, comic-like or abstract.
Digital Zines
I started off creating some digital zines with my digital artwork and poetry. I created the pages in Canva and then pulled those into a video to share on social media.
Below you can find my zine about mental health and a link to more zines including one about pain, a third sharing my kawandi quilt projects and another with some my abstract planet paintings.
Physical Zines
After learning how to create digital zines I thought it would be interesting to learn how to make physical Zines. After having a whole heap of fun looking at lots of Zines made by people around the world I knew what size I wanted to create. I decided to make a zine out of one piece of A4 and created a template which would be easily printable. This template can easily be filled with text and images digitally then printed; or printed and then hand completed.
You can see below my first physical zine ready to be printed. I'll make a video soon to share it printed.
Why not make a zine yourself
Having shared a digital and physical zine with the "Make Art" online group organised by "OutsideIn", I agreed to lead a session about zine making and decided to create a one page "how to" guide which you can see below.
Thanks go to 64 Million Artists, the cut out club, the craftivist collective and many zine creators for your inspiration in my zine journey.
